Jin Kirkland
→Full Name: Jin Kirkland
→Nicknames:
- Michael (English Name)
- Lei Siu Chun (Former Name)
- Wang Jialong (Former Name)
→Nation: Hong Kong, Special Administrative Region of the People’s Republic of China
→Gender: Male
→Age: Sixteen [16]
→Applicable Age: Seventeen [17]
→Physical Description: Jin stands at 5'4 and possesses a slim frame with oddly prominent hips making him appear slightly androgynous. His dark brown hair contrasts strongly with his pale skin and falls in short, choppy layers. He keeps his long bangs brushed dutifully to the left in hopes of covering his freakishly thick eyebrows; however, his attempts are rarely successful. Jin’s eyes are a light shade of brown and depending on the lighting can sometimes appear as a warm gold colour. Despite having a very youthful, even innocent appearance, there seems to be a permanent expression of boredom and apathy cemented onto his face, making it hard to guess what he may be thinking. He does smile on occasion, though only a handful of people have ever seen it happen; it’s currently filed as an urban myth in some circles.
→Distinguishing Features: The two furry caterpillars taking residence above his eyes have been a source of frustration for many of Jin’s lives, though he can never seem to get rid of them, no matter how hard he tries.
"Forgiving does not erase the bitter past. A healed memory is not a deleted memory. Instead, forgiving what we cannot forget creates a new way to remember. We change the memory of our past into a hope for our future."
→Personality: Jin is a rather calm, quiet individual, though he has a penchant for causing chaos whenever life gets too monotonous for his liking. Sharp in both wit and tongue, he's rarely afraid to tell others what he feels should be said, whether they want to hear it or not. It's difficult to predict what hefs thinking, due to his seemingly permanent blank expression. However, those that get to know him will come to notice little nuances in his tone of voice when he's feeling annoyed or upset. Jin can seem a little random at times, especially when he hasnft gotten enough sleep for whatever reason; unusual observations and side comments are common. He always holds himself with an unshakable pride that seems to exceed whatever social standing he's currently in; being poor doesn't mean you have to act like it.
Despite his outward calm, Jin is very easily annoyed and can hold a grudge for a ridiculously long time. Hefs painfully blunt and sarcastic, often saying things without fully considering the consequences of his words. Even though he likes to think of himself as independent and perfectly capable of doing anything and everything, Jin often seeks reassurance from others, showing that he's a bit unconfident in his own skills.
While a little difficult to deal with initially, once Jin warms up to someone, he becomes an incredibly trustworthy friend who would willingly go out of his way to help.
→Likes:
- Pandas: Because how can anyone hate them? Seriously.
- Firecrackers: Fire in general, really. Watching people run around like headless chickens after setting off a row of firecrackers is one of his favourite pastimes.
- Tea: He’s a fan of both English and Chinese preparations, though his preference depends strongly on his mood.
- Cooking: This comes as second nature to Jin and was most likely learned out of desperation. Most of his food tends to be a unique mixture of savoury and sweet.
- Fashion: Most of what little money gets is put towards buying one new piece of clothing. While he’s somewhat of a slave to fads, his clothing selection is surprisingly timeless.
- Being coddled: He’ll deny it to the grave, but Jin loves being fussed over...just as long as it isn’t in public.
→Dislikes:
- Poppies: Jin can’t place his finger on it, but there’s something about this flower that puts him on edge - he hates them.
- Smoking: This seems to be tied with his aversion to poppies for some reason.
- Spicy Food: He prefers sweeter things...or rather, a nice balance of the two.
- Small children: Their lacking sense of personal space us what annoys him the most, though he also finds it puzzling that people seem to adore them for being useless.
- Being ignored: Nothing irritates him more; he tends to fall into a silent, seething rut after being blatantly pushed aside for someone else.
- Feeling boxed in: While he’s not opposed to rules, being forced to follow too many only ends up frustrating him.
→Fears:
- Being abandoned: Jin has always gotten a mild sense of panic whenever left alone for long periods of time, especially if it’s without warning. His separation anxiety has given way to an irrational fear of being abandoned by his loved ones. While he doesn’t like to admit it, he depends heavily on others to maintain a sense of stability and order; without them, he would completely lose it. Jin has watched countless people die and knows the far too well what it feels like to be alone.
- Being used: The idea of being valued simply as a tool rather than as an individual can and has kept him up on countless nights. There is always a tinge of distrust tainting his relationships, no matter how close he is to the other person. He does it unconsciously as a sort of defense in case he is ever betrayed or let down; it’s proven to be something of a useful hindrance...
→Aspirations:
- Get into a university: Poverty does not still well with Jin, and the only way to escape it is to get into a high paying job, even if it means leaving the country. He's been studying hard for the sake of himself and his father, hoping to eventually get them the life he knows they deserve. Of course, even if he manages to get accepted into a university, there's still the issue of paying for tuition...
- Teach his father how to cook: Other than the secondhand embarrassment he experiences when others poke fun at Arthur’s disastrous culinary skills, it hurts to see his father get put down over something so trivial. He wants to dedicate the afternoons of every Sunday to teaching Arthur how to use the stove, oven, measuring spoons, and most importantly, the difference between salt and sugar.
→Lesser Known Facts:
- Polar bears confuse him: Where are the black spots?
- Actually doesn’t mind his father’s cooking: Sure it’s not the best in the world and it may be a little more crunchy than some people are used to, but it’s not like eating it would kill anyone. ...Right?
- He loves gossip: Especially when it’s about stuff that can ruin someone’s reputation; perfect blackmail material.
- More superstitious than he’d like to admit: The furniture placement in his bedroom is based heavily on the principles of feng shui and he’s a sucker for traditional Chinese remedies for mild illnesses, especially if food is involved.
- Can’t hold his alcohol: Two sips and he’s floored.
"I don't believe in fate or destiny. I believe in various degrees of hatred, paranoia, and abandonment. However much of that gets heaped upon you doesn't matter; it's only a matter of how much you can take and what it does to you."

→Current History: On July 1, 1917, Jin was born as the ‘eldest’ of two identical twins in Bristol, England. However, his status as an older sibling was very short lived, as his younger brother died shortly after birth due to several complications. His mother, Feng, never came to terms with this loss and quickly became almost obsessively protective of her remaining son.
One year after Jin was born, his father, Jonathan, was drafted into the First World War. Although he joined during what was arguably the tail end, the fighting was still as bloody and fierce as ever. The man never returned home, and while Feng and Jin had never gotten an official statement about his status, it was safe to assume the man had died during combat. While Feng had taken the blow surprisingly well (especially considering her behaviour following Zhou’s death), Jin somehow grew to misunderstand his father’s absence as a form of abandonment. Despite Feng’s efforts to impart as much love as she possibly could to make up for the lack of a father, Jin always had a small inkling in the back of his mind that she would disappear as well.
When Jin was four, Feng used most of their remaining money to move to London, where she worked wherever she could in order to keep her small family afloat. As Jin made his way through school, receiving top marks despite being bullied relentlessly for his mixed ethnicity and quiet disposition, he began to notice his mother growing weaker with every passing month. Jin was ten when he returned home from school to find his mother unconscious on the kitchen floor. Although he had managed to move her onto the living room couch, there really wasn’t much that he could do; he stayed by her side until she passed away later that evening.
After placing a call to the local police station informing them of his mother’s passing...Jin ran. He had heard stories about the orphanages; the filthy living conditions, the lack of individual attention from the caretakers, and perhaps the most horrifying of all...the disgusting food they served. He would much rather sleep out in the cold than eat gruel served on a dirty plate by someone that didn’t give a damn about him. No attention was better than forced attention after all. Rather than risk being sent to one of those hellholes, Jin figured he would give life on the streets a try.
That mindset lasted for about a week, as Jin was soon desperate to find somewhere, anywhere to stay, as long as it was inside. In his repressed grief, he hadn’t taken England’s everlasting gloomy weather into account. Already on his way to turning himself over to the orphanage (he had equated the place to prison), he accidentally bumped into an oddly familiar looking blond with eyebrows even larger than his own. Much to his surprise, the man offered him a place to stay; he was understandably skeptical at first, though given his current living situation, he would have been an idiot to refuse. After a very pleasant stay with Arthur and his mother for a little over a month, he and his new father relocated to the small town of Genova in Canada. Jin didn’t know the full details of their sudden move, though he suspected money was involved...as it always was.
